BerlinControversial use of antibiotics in animal houses has declined according to official data – but poultry continues to use many particularly important active substances. Consumption in six species dropped by almost one third to 204 tons between 2014 and 2017, according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture data on Wednesday. In pig pigs and pigs, the amount decreased by more than 40 percent, with cattle by 76 percent. On the other hand, in broilers was four percent, and in chickens for chickens one percent.

In poultry, especially critical spare antibiotics account for about 40% of the total number, in pigs and cattle less than 10%. These are especially important substances that are also used in people with serious illness when conventional antibiotics are no longer effective. Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU) said the high share of poultry is unacceptable. Cloths should only be used in emergencies and after careful consideration. Industry is obliged to act. Klöckner was otherwise threatened by legal proceedings.

The use of drugs in the bar has long been criticized. It should sink to prevent the activation of active substances. In addition, the reporting requirements introduced in 2014 will also serve this purpose. Farmers therefore have to officially report pigs, chicks, turkeys and cattle every six months. Data is collected and evaluated across the country. Authorities can order tests and countermeasures. Ecologists and Greenpeople call for further measures, such as the complete ban on spare antibiotics in cattle breeding.
