According to the National Health Commission (NHC), China has massively increased its fight against breaches in the aesthetic surgery industry.
According to the NHC report, a total of 1,219 criminal acts related to medical treatment and drug safety in the period from May 2017 to April 2018 have been conducted within the campaign to combat the violations of cosmetic surgery industry. According to the commission's report, the police have arrested 1899 suspects.
During a one-year campaign across the country, 4646 complaints were filed, of which 4417 were prosecuted, according to the NHC.
In total, seven government agencies participated in the campaign. In the Commission's view, health authorities reviewed 40,878 health institutions and treated 843 cases that violated laws and regulations. Thirty-one medical institutions are suspended from duty, the report says.
Pharmaceutical regulators also controlled more than 103,000 manufacturers and sellers of medicines and medical products, the commission said. 184 of them were suspended from the service, seven had to hand over their permits, the report said.
The campaign also dealt with organizations offering illegal training in aesthetic surgery, as well as cases where cosmetic surgery and online information violated the laws and regulations.
The NHC has stated that it wants to further strengthen information-sharing controls and use smart technology, while encouraging industry associations to play a greater role in self-regulation and to strengthen co-ordination with other bodies.
