Driving report: Skoda Superb Facelift

WITHP-X / Vienna. Almost at the same time as VW Passat, the Czech brother of medium-sized bestseller is also being upgraded. The Skoda Superb, available as a limo and a wagon, is now visually carefully modernized and, with new technological enhancements, continues its success story. Since the launch of the Superb series in 2001, Škoda has brought more than 1.2 million units of its leading boat among the people, of which more than 500,000 are only for the now revised third generation.

It is recognized at least for 28,850 euros, updated Superb – just knowing – with gentle retouching at the front and back. The grid has risen, double ribs down, left and right side by side, new, wider lights. From now on, they always shine with LED technology overnight, on request and for an additional 1,800 euros, Škoda also assembles matrix lights that should illuminate the street to the maximum without dazzling the upcoming traffic. Technology is known from the VW Group but is used for the first time in the Czechoslovak company. Engineers also focus on LED technology at the back, and Superb also has an advertised, recognizable Škoda logo. For the premium version of Laurin & Klement is also provided with a slightly chrome finish.

Inside, the first thing you'll notice is digital instruments with different display options – assuming you're willing to invest less than $ 400 for a 10.25-inch screen. The basic infotainment system comes with an 8-inch screen, while the top version has a 9.2-inch touch screen. Behind him is the latest group software that not only understands gesture control and is always online when it's needed but also provides a smooth connection between Apple and Android smartphones. Now they can be charged inductively in the phone box in front of the shift lever, alternatively there are several USB ports and a 230-volt socket ready.

Also in Driver Assist Systems, the Czechs are recharged: Like its VW brother Passat, Superb's cruise control now responds to speed signs and automatically adjusts the speed to the allowed Vmax; In addition, the system automatically starts the gas before the bend, so that you can smoothly move around the corner without additional braking. The fact that he himself kept the track is almost obvious. However, Škoda often remembers the steering wheel – even if you have not taken the Volanta hand. If the driver can not actually intervene, for example as a result of emergency medical assistance, Superb automatically starts emergency braking at the roadside. And he enters the iron when he recognizes pedestrians on the road.

Below the holes, in the future, at least ten engine combinations will be available, with a 1.5-liter petrol engine, which marks 110 kW / 150 hp, coming later in the year. With it the price fell to the mentioned 28.850 euros, and is currently at least 32.000 euros for the new 2.0 TDI. Although it also delivers 110 kW / 150 hp as its predecessor comes from a whole new generation of engines – among other things, revision of crankshaft, exhaust system, turbo system, injection system and heat management. All this should have a positive impact on consumption, but not yet fair value is available.

What is remarkable is that the new engine is also much better insulated and barely noticeable in the interior. The fact that with about 350 Newton meters, which manages either a manual six-speed gearbox or seven-speed dual clutch, also provides sufficient power, it does not matter: highway speed is in good new seconds and maximum 220 km / h are perfect for the highway. In general, long is the favorite discipline of Skoda, quiet and peaceful.

Additional adaptive shock absorbers are available that can significantly affect the comfort factor or the sport. In addition, Škoda offers Superb as an expressive sports version, which Czech put one centimeter closer to the asphalt; the reverse is a new Scout model with rugged plastic pads and 1.5 inches more clearance from the ground (caravan only).

Those who love sports can use a two-liter diesel engine of 140 kW / 190 hp (from 38,350 €). There is an automated series here, there is an option for all four wheels. Movement belongs to the premium petrol engine with 200 kW / 272 hp (from 48.290 euros) and standard equipment. Among them is ranked, with 35.850 euros significantly cheaper and with about six standard liters less thirsty, yet another two-cylinder four-cylinder turbo engine, which provides 140 kW / 190 hp. Speaking of thirst: If you want to make a particularly economical progress, you have to wait before the end of the year and then launch the plug-in hybrid Superb iV. The 1.4-liter petrol engine (115 kW / 156 hp) developed together with an electric motor of 85 kW 160 kW / 218 hp, a clean electric, Stromer part-time can travel 55 kilometers. The 13 kWh battery can be charged for three and a half hours, but the volume of luggage is limited by about 150 liters to 485 liters (limo) or 510 liters (caravan).
