82.5 billion Swiss francs: In 2017, health spending in Switzerland was so high. 477.90 Swiss Francs: According to the Federal Public Health Offices calculations, this is now the average standard adult premium. Yvette Estermann, a doctor and National Advisor to the SVP, wants to overcome the notorious growth of costs by a radical popular initiative. Therefore, every human being should have the right "to determine the nature and scope of the security" freely. And the federal government should adopt different insurance models. This is the text of the initiative that was published on Tuesday published in the Federal List.

Behind the worries there are no parties, but individuals. The Initiative Committee includes the critics of the vaccine Daniel Trappitsch, cantonal council of Ciriha Urs Hans (Grüne) and Theres Schöni from the health network Freiamt. Estermann, the board's actor, can even imagine, with relatively openly formulated texts, a field for removing the health insurance obligation to run. She would be alone for that, except for the kids. Her proposal was not revolutionary. After all, compulsory insurance in Switzerland started only in 1996.

The possible implementation of the referendum has already been formulated by Estermann. In March he submitted a proposal called "Krankenkasse light". In it, it invites the Federal Council to take the necessary steps to ensure that people with a very limited list of benefits can be assured. Especially the middle class suffers from the increasing premium burden. However, many insurers would know exactly that they never need a comprehensive directory of basic insurance services. Estermann is confident that he will accept lower benefits and lower benefits. It does not affect the treatment of severe, acute illnesses such as heart attacks or pulmonary embolism. However, Estermann could have imagined that people consciously work without organ transplantation or cancer therapy with serious side effects.

Urs Hans runs an organic farm in the Turbenthal municipality in Zurich. In animals it relies on homeopathy. It also favors alternative medicine among people, the system in Switzerland is too focused on the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. According to Hans, for example, thanks to this initiative, people could choose a model that would provide them solely for the treatment of alternative methods. However, it does not compromise the insurance obligation. Even vital treatments should continue to be funded in solidarity.

Two-cell medicine warning

Theres Schöni, the driving force of the referendum, is convinced that the initiative committee will reach the required 100,000 signatures by the end of the collection period on 2 January 2021. She believes that the population has great support for that goal, she says. There will be no lack of skeptical voices. For Stefan Müller-Altermatt, director of the campaign for cost-cutting initiative of his party, the member of the National Council of Solothurn CVP, "light of health insurance" means a step towards two-way medicine. For the same reason, the Federal Council also recommends Esterman's proposal for refusal. And he asks who has to bear the costs if someone with a reduced offer for serious illness has to use a full list of services.
