Degree on a favorite island of the Germans: a cruise ship sloped in front of Mallorca with water contaminated by pool cream into the sea. Environmentalists are outraged. Because unlike humans, sunscreen for animals and plants underwater is not a blessing, but a curse.
From the surveillance aircraft, rescue from Öllache was clearly visible. Therefore, the crew alerted: in early July, a cruise ship from Majorca with sunscreen and other substances from the deck pool was filtered off to sea, according to Mallorca, citing the Spanish Ministry of Infrastructure.
The incident a few weeks ago was, according to the report, the sixth species of its kind since 2010. The number of unreported cases is likely to be higher.
Not illegal, but still problematic
Over twelve nautical miles along the coast, ships are allowed to discharge untreated sewage into the sea. But even if the crusade crews do not act illegally, they attract the wrath of environmentalists. They fear the reef. Because sunscreen contains chemicals that clog animals and plants of a sensitive underwater world, preventing them from growing. Many are UV filters especially for corals.
Benzophenones, octinoxate and okocrylene are especially critical. At least in the sunscreens found on the European market, benzophenones are rarely used today because they are supposed to act as hormones. Anders Octocrylen: According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, these substances are found in four of the five products.
Therefore, okrilen is harmful to the environment, primarily because the substance is not water soluble. They are difficult to break down and thus more or less accumulate in the body or on the surfaces.
There really is no eco-friendly sunblock
The submarine, except for Mallorca, suffers from sunscreens. Therefore, the problem is recognized, among others, in the Italian Adriatic and Hawaii. That's why Hawaii passed a law last year banning products with certain ingredients, including benzophenone and octinoxate. However, the ban will only take effect on January 1, 2021.
Of course no one would want to swim without sun protection on a beach vacation. So what can eco-conscious consumers do?
Organic sunscreens often do not go without chemical UV filters. Instead, physical filters like titanium dioxide protect human skin from cancerous UV rays. However, studies that prove that physical filters do not actually harm the underwater world are lacking. Researchers have found titanium dioxide to kill water fleas.
The sunscreen is environmentally free. The opportunity remains to wear a T-shirt and a pair of slim pants. If you use sunscreen, at least you should do without frequent creams.

When it comes to choosing the right SPF, many sun worshipers are at a loss. Dermatologists recommend LSF 30 especially for sensitive skin types – for psychological reasons.
