Marion Nestle: Why do we overeat?

http://bigthink.com

People are more likely to eat more, the more food is in front of them.

Marion Nestle: It's actually very good research that now shows why people eat. It turns out that anyone, no matter how educated you are – even me – will overeat if I get a large amount of food. In fact, you can demonstrate that the greater part of the food presented to someone, the more calories they will eat of that food even if they are not done with it. Foods that are closer to you will be consumed in larger quantities than foods that are further away. Foods in wide, fat glasses will be consumed in larger calories than in tall, thin glasses. I mean there are all kinds of visual and small tricks that businesses use to get people to eat more food. They knew all this. We have only learned about it recently through working with people who are doing very well research.
