It will certainly not have delighted a large part of the Italian fans and, more broadly, Valentino Rossi, but the performance of the Grand Prix of San Marino deserved a podium, which the young Spanish driver went to seek with blood- cold in the last laps of the race.
Qualified just behind the first Suzuki factory on the starting grid, in eighth place, Mir was particularly distinguished in the last kilometers of the race during which he had to first make the decision to attack his teammate Álex Rins, then to seize the opportunity of a better rhythm in the final passage to carry a clean and unstoppable attack on Valentino Rossi, who still dreamed until in the last turns of completing a podium “100% VR Academy” with the winner Franco Morbidelli and a Pecco Bagnaia returning from an injury on whom he put pressure until the finish line.
A candidate for the title?
Of course, Mir’s double feat at the end of the race delighted the young driver, relieved to have overcome two of the opponents against whom it is necessary to be solid when trying to make an impression in the discipline: her own teammate, and the living legend herself!
Mir occupies a solid fourth position in the Drivers’ World Championship, 16 points behind new leader Andrea Dovizioso, from whom he has taken nine units in the last two events to date. In an excellent dynamic, the young Spaniard made a strong contribution to seeing Suzuki register the most points in the world team championship in Misano.
