The director of the American Institute of Infectious Diseases has warned the United States if nothing is done to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Senior US health officials on Tuesday called on Americans, especially young people, to cover their faces and avoid the crowds in order to stem the Covid-19 pandemic, which has gotten out of control in part of the United States. Four doctors at the head of large American health organizations testified Tuesday before senators amazed to see the curve of cases start again in more than half of the United States, while Europe succeeded in taking control of the virus.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who heads the Institute of Infectious Diseases, has delivered a grim prediction: of 40,000 new cases detected per day today, the pandemic could jump to 100,000. “It is obvious that we do not have total control at present,” insisted the doctor, a member of the presidential crisis cell on the coronavirus, and whose speech is the most free. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we hit 100,000 a day if we don’t reverse the trend,” he added. In the worst of spring, the counter was around 30,000 cases per day. The greater availability of screening tests does not in itself explain the current increase.
Doctor Fauci deplored the “all or nothing” practiced by many Americans: either completely confined, or “in bars, without masks, without avoiding crowds, without practicing physical distancing”. “We all have a role to play,” he insisted, denouncing the young people who feel “invulnerable”. “An infected person may not have symptoms, but they can infect someone else,” he says, like a grandmother or a child with leukemia.
